How the 2027 Social Security COLA May Affect You
Russ Coleman

Social Security benefits are set to increase in 2027 following a newly announced cost-of-living adjustment (COLA). While the adjustment may provide additional monthly income for many recipients, Medicare premiums and other household costs can influence how much of the increase is ultimately available to spend.

On October 14, 2026, the Social Security Administration (SSA) announced a 3.6% COLA for 2027. This is the largest Social Security benefit increase since 2023 and will affect an estimated 76 million people who receive Social Security or Supplemental Security Income (SSI).

For beneficiaries planning their finances and healthcare expenses, it is important to understand both the benefit increase and the related changes that may affect take-home payments.

What Will the 3.6% Social Security Increase Mean?

Starting in January 2027, Social Security beneficiaries will receive a 3.6% increase in their monthly payments. This is higher than the 2.8% COLA applied in 2026.

The SSA estimates that the average retired worker’s monthly benefit will rise by about $75, increasing from $2,095 to $2,170. Over a full year, that change amounts to approximately $900 in additional benefits.

People who receive SSI will also receive the 3.6% adjustment. Their revised payments will begin on December 31, 2026.

The purpose of a COLA is to help beneficiaries retain purchasing power as the cost of common necessities rises. Still, the exact increase each person receives depends on their current benefit amount.

How Does the SSA Calculate a COLA?

The SSA determines the annual COLA by reviewing changes in the cost of everyday goods and services. This includes expenses such as food, transportation, and housing.

To make the calculation, the agency relies on the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers, commonly called the CPI-W. The SSA compares the CPI-W figures from July through September with results from the same three-month period in the prior year.

That comparison produced the 3.6% increase for 2027. Although the adjustment is intended to help benefits keep pace with inflation, it may not cover every increase in essential expenses, particularly healthcare costs.

Additional Social Security Updates for 2027

In addition to the higher monthly benefit, the SSA announced other changes that may matter to people who are working, nearing retirement, or receiving retirement or survivor benefits.

For 2027, the maximum annual earnings subject to Social Security taxes will increase from $184,500 to $192,300.

The earnings limit also changes for beneficiaries who receive Social Security retirement or survivor benefits before reaching full retirement age. If you will be below full retirement age for all of 2027, the earnings limit will be $25,560.

For individuals who reach full retirement age during 2027, the limit will be $67,920 for earnings received before the month they reach that age. Once full retirement age is reached, there is no earnings limit.

How Medicare Premiums Can Affect Your Payment

A larger Social Security benefit does not always mean the same amount of additional income will reach your bank account each month. Medicare premiums can affect the final payment you receive.

Many beneficiaries have their Medicare Part B premiums deducted directly from their Social Security payments. If those premiums rise in 2027, they may reduce part of the additional income created by the COLA.

Reviewing both your updated benefit amount and your Medicare costs can provide a clearer picture of the change to your monthly budget. This is especially useful when planning for healthcare needs and out-of-pocket expenses.

Steps to Take as You Plan for 2027

As the new benefit amounts take effect, taking time to review your financial information can help you prepare for the year ahead.

  • Check your updated benefit information. Once the revised details are available, you can view your personalized COLA notice and benefit amount through your Social Security online account.
  • Update your retirement budget. Consider the higher benefit alongside possible changes in Medicare premiums, taxes, and other routine living costs.

Understanding the relationship between Social Security benefit changes and Medicare expenses can make it easier to anticipate the income available for your monthly needs. A careful review of both can help you plan more confidently for healthcare and household costs in 2027.
